Oral Allergy Syndrome

Also known as Pollen-food syndrome. Some people with a pollen allergy may have localized oral symptoms with certain raw fruits, vegetables and tree nuts that are cross reactive to pollens. A common symptom is an itchy mouth or throat after eating a pitted fruit, such as fresh apples, peaches, or cherries.

Due to a protein conformation change with heat, the oral symptoms do not occur if the fruit or vegetable is in its heated or processed form, such as apple pie and canned peaches. In most cases, the risk of a severe allergic reaction is low, however it is recommended to avoid tree nuts and peanut causing oral symptoms.
