Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema)

Atopic dermatitis is common in young infants and can be bothersome throughout childhood and adulthood. The eczema rash consists of patches of dry, scaly, red skin that is very itchy. Usually itching leads to red, inflamed skin that can weep and bleed. It is caused by a skin barrier defect, which leads to chronic inflammation and itching. Treatment includes daily emollient therapy to act as a skin barrier and topical corticosteroid cream to decrease inflammation.

Contrary to popular belief, eczema is not caused by food allergies. However, poorly controlled eczema in early life can be associated with increased allergies.
