Asthma

Asthma is a chronic lung disease characterized by inflammation of the respiratory tract and bronchoconstriction (tightening of the lower airways). Asthma symptoms include dry cough, chest tightness, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Common triggers are viral colds, exercise, cold air, smoke, and inhaled allergens such as pollens and animal dander. In older children and adults, a breathing test can help with the diagnosis of asthma.

People who have asthma can live a normal, unrestricted life if treated appropriately. The management of asthma typically involves a daily inhaled corticosteroid puffer and an emergency puffer to be used as needed.

You should see your doctor if you think your child has asthma. For acute asthma attacks, seek medical attention immediately.
